That's a web-programmable thermostat installed by Delmarva Power in my home  today.  It can help save up to 10% off my cooling costs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, so says Delmarva.  It didn't cost me a cents as my electric company is provided the device and installation for free.  Not only that but will take a little of my electric bill within the next few months to sweeten the deal. So how does it save me money and why does Delmarva care?  I'll answer the second part first.  During peak demands of summer, when customers are demanding tons of electricity, Delmarva can reduce consumption  by turning down their air conditioners, if they have one of these thermostats.  This way Delmarva can supply demand with less fear of brown-outs.  This is total speculation by me, but it seems to make sense, right?  It save me money because I'll use less electricity during a "conservation" period when my air conditioner takes a break. Delmarva Power has a website with information:  delmarva.com/rewards  If I'm not satisfied with the device, Delmarva will re-install my old thermostat, for free. But this post is really about my lighting of the thermostat. Note the drama, dramatic lighting! It was two pictures stitched together.  One picture was exposed for the back-lighted LCD panel.  The other was the outer portion of thermostat and wall, lit by a moving flashlight over the area for about 10 seconds. I recently went to some photography workshops.  One of the photographers used this technique "painting with light" to create some stunning images. <p>
