Editorial Photography by E.W. Faircloth U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar is proposing federal 'kill switch' legislation to combat the growing problem of cell phone theft. Klobuchar's bill would enable cell phone theft victims to render their phones inoperable to thieves and wipe their personal and financial information from the device. The picture above is just a little editorial photography to bring the point home quickly. A real switch to make a phone useless would happen digitally over the phone network. Many other prominent politicians besides Sen. Klobuchar are calling for kill switches to be installed on cell phones. The cell phone carriers are resisting the efforts. I, too, would not want my phone to be remotely turned off. If I could kill my stolen phone, so could hackers, NSA, CIA, FBI, Homeland Security, and even the local police if they deemed it necessary. Ex-President Jimmy Carter has stated he sends regular letters to foreign heads of state and other officials, not email. He may feel that it's time to slow the stampede to put everything on the Internet as I. A kill switch, no thank you.
