Now we know that the Navy successfully destroyed the crippled satellite on Thursday. Weeks before then I was reading about the proposal to knock this spy satellite out of the sky. I also remember the Chinese doing something like this a year ago. Why the spoon? According to AP story: "The effort - the first of its kind- is undertaking because of the potential for people in the area where the satellite would otherwise crash could harm", the officials said. Excuse me? It was a first of its kind operation by the USA, not everybody else. Maybe the "officials" who spoon fed the "piece" to the reporter failed to mention the Chinese stunt. Think it would be too much for a reporter to research the subject. Maybe How-To-Google should be taught in Journalism 101. More than likely the USA shot the satellite down for military reasons. The USA and much of the world now depend on satellites. The USA couldn't fight a war today with satellites. Those so-called smart bombs depend on satellites. When the Chinese displayed their ability to knock out a satellite I'm sure the military boys in the USA became nervous. Instead of a Pulitzer Prize maybe the reporter this article deserves a spoon. Let's call it "The Faircloth Award". Since the mass media in this country no longer does much investigative/discovery/contextual journalism anymore, I have a suggestion for their bottom line: Get rid of the writers. They're just in the middle passing on stuff written by the "officials" and being paid for little work. Just print/broadcast what the officials turn in at the end of the day. Heck, what we have is not too far removed from that scenario right now. Keep the photojournalists, though. I've got friends who need the work. I'm on vacation for a little more than a week. If this blog isn't updated you'll know why. But knowing myself, if I get Internet access I'll post.
