She's looking at me but can't see me. After 20 years as a good pet Smokie was put to rest. Time robbed her of her sight, ability to navigate easily around the house, and reliable use of the litter box. When little girls, Maya and Jamila wanted a kitten and said they would take care of it. Margo took care of Smokie. Smokie used to sleep in the bed with the girls when they were young. If fact, at one time she was sleeping on Jamila's pillow. Later Jamila declared her room off limits as she became allergic to Smokie. My mother-in-law, Mary, would keep Smoke while we went on vacation. We would have to sneak her into the apartment complex because Mary could not have pets unless she paid more fees. The cat was very smart. She taught herself how to open doors, taught us to give her fresh water out of the spiggot.  She spent her life inside our home as her claws were removed as a kitten.  At one time she would try to get outside.  If you opened the door and not notice her, she would run out.  She would not let you catch her. A few minutes later she would be sitting at the front door to get back in.  The last 4 or 5 years she would sit in front of the glass door to look outside.  If you went to open the door she would move away from it.  Smokie was a very good pet.
